How to Start Kiondo Basket Weaving: A Beginner’s Guide in Kenya

The Heritage of the Kenyan Kiondo

Kiondo weaving is a centerpiece of Kenyan culture. Originally crafted by the Agikuyu and Akamba people, these sisal baskets have evolved from functional farm tools to global fashion icons. If you are looking for a creative Sunday activity in Nairobi or a way to connect with local traditions, mastering the Kiondo is the perfect start.

Essential Tools for Beginner Weavers

To begin your journey, you need the right raw materials. Most beginners in our Nairobi workshops start with:

  • Sisal Fiber: The heart of the basket. It’s durable, sustainable, and native to Kenya

  • Dye: To create a colourful basket

If you don't want to hunt for materials in downtown markets, buy our Kiondo Weaving Kit with everything you need, including a video tutorial with step-by-step guidance. You can also buy the kiondo weaving materials separately.

4 Basic Steps to Your First Kiondo Basket

  1. The Base (The Foundation): Every Kiondo starts with a "radiating" center. You lay out your warp (vertical) fibers first.

  2. The Twining Technique: This is the "over-under" rhythm where the wefts twist around the warps. Keep your tension tight to ensure the basket holds its shape. You may use sisal, yarn, or any other fabrics for wefting.

  3. Adding Structure: You make your kiondo basket stronger or wider by weaving in more warps into your rhythm.

  4. Finishing the Rim: A well-finished rim ensures your basket lasts a lifetime

Join a Weaving Community in Nairobi

Self-teaching is great, but nothing beats learning from a master. We host a Monthly Sunday Weaving Circle in Nairobi designed for both expats and locals. It’s a mindful, social space to learn the craft, share stories, and support local artisans.
